2019 Amazon/Negro Rivers Expedition
In October 2019, the Global Rivers Observatory will embark on its fourth river expedition to the largest river on Earth – the Amazon River and its major tributary, the Rio Negro, in the heart of the Brazilian rain forest. This unique expedition allows guest to experience this amazing ecosystem, to see how scientists study the ecology and chemistry of rivers, and participate in science discussions that shape our future research on this river system.
2017 Columbia & Snake Rivers Expedition
In October 2017, scientists of the Global Rivers Observatory embarked on their third river expedition to the Columbia & Snake rivers in the Pacific northwest aboard the 32-passenger MV Island Spirit. Guests were invited to work alongside an international team of river scientists as they developed projects and collected samples, participated in evening discussions and presentations, and took side trips to explore both natural and engineered areas along the rivers.
2016 Mekong River Expedition
In March 2016, scientists of the Global Rivers Observatory embarked on their second river expedition – this time to “the mother of waters,” the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. This unique expedition allowed guests a first-hand experience of this amazing ecosystem. They saw how scientists study the ecology and chemistry of rivers and participated in discussions that led to the inclusion of the Mekong River in the Global Rivers Observatory.
2014 Amazon River Expedition
In December 2014, the Global Rivers Observatory embarked on their first annual river expedition to the largest river on Earth – the Amazon River in the heart of the Brazilian rain forest. This unique expedition allowed guest to experience this amazing ecosystem, to see how scientists study the ecology and chemistry of rivers, and participate in discussions that lead to new scientific projects, a stage in scientific research rarely witnessed by non-scientists.
